Kernedevents

Contest #24: “Newsworthy”

Do you love playing with type? Are you up on your current events? This week we're asking you to create a type sample based on current events. Find an article online about something interesting or offbeat, then choose a typeface and create a type specimen that represents the article.

We've been doing a similar thing over the past few months with Kerned Events, so feel free to check out the gallery for over a hundred examples – like this one about the skinniest building in Greenwich Village and this one about a prank zombie contingency plan.

Entries will be judged and the 5 best type specimens will win $199 subscriptions for Veer Marketplace. You can enter this contest as many times as you want.

------------------------------------

How to participate:

1. Search online for an interesting or offbeat news article.

2. Create a type specimen that interprets, sums up, or pokes fun at the news article.

3. Host your image wherever you like (Flickr, TwitPic, Veer Ideas, etc.).

4. Sign up or sign in to your free Veer Ideas account.

5. Post the URL of your image here, in the comments section of this post, along with the headline & link to the article you chose.

Having trouble signing in? See the first comment below, for help.

------------------------------------

Entries will be judged on sheer creativity! Also, how well your type sample relates to the news story. Your specimen can include words from the article, but doesn't have to. You can use any typeface you like – it doesn't need to be one that Veer sells. You have until next Thursday (October 15th, 11:59pm PDT) to enter. We'll announce and post the five winners here and on Twitter (VeerUpdate) on Friday.

For more information and eligibility requirements, visit the contest page.

Good luck and have fun!

How to participate:

1. Dream up a concept.

2. Take two photos - one themed “Before” and one themed “After”.

3. Host the resulting image (or images, if you want to post them separately) wherever you like (Flickr, TwitPic, Veer Ideas, etc.).

5. Sign up or sign in to your free Veer Ideas account.

6. Post the URL(s) of your photo(s) here, in the comments section of this post.

Having trouble signing in? See the first comment below, for help.

Fridge

Contest #14: “Shuffle”

Everybody's got something to say. So, for the third week-long challenge, we're asking you to write a little something, magnetic fridge poetry style.

Using the sheet of words provided, piece together something absurd, a poignant statement, a wry witticism, or even an actual poem. You can keep your entry short and sweet or ramble on, make it industry-related or comment on the cosmos.

The entries will be judged and the 5 most well-crafted combinations will win $199 subscriptions for Veer Marketplace. You can enter as many times as you want.

------------------------------------

How to participate:

1. Download the PDF.

2. Print & cut out the individual words (you can do this on-screen if you like).

3. Choose and arrange words into an interesting sentence, phrase, or poem.

4. Take a photo (or a screenshot) of your creation.

4. Host the file wherever you like (Flickr, TwitPic, Veer Ideas, etc.).

5. Sign up or sign in to your free Veer Ideas account.

6. Post the URL of your photo here, in the comments section of this post.

Having trouble signing in? See the first comment below, for help.

------------------------------------

Entries will be judged on originality, creativity, and typographic excellence! You have until next Thursday (October 1st, 11:59pm PDT) to enter. We'll announce and post the five winners here and on Twitter (VeerUpdate) on Friday.

For more information and eligibility requirements, visit the contest page.

Happy shuffling!
