Japanese Body-Poppin’

Ultra-cool music video with some serious body-poppin. From Neo, the creators of that Gene Kelly VW ad. Via Japundit.
Update: Now mirrored here.

Pretty sure this technique will be employed in more TV ads in the future. Probably with a lot of old people and fatties.

This video stylee is this year's version of the early 90s morph effect and the three dimensional rotating freeze-frame inspired by The Matrix. Unfortunately, we'll be seeing pop-locking housewives in Swiffer commercials before the summer is out.

This is popping, not locking :)
Really cool though.

Um, yeah Luke. Use the link mentioned above and command-click (or right-click) to save the QuickTime movie to your machine. Simple as milk.

My God, this is absolutely hilarious. I am a popper of several years, and to see oldass senior citizens doing it so good made me crack up to no end. Thank you so much for posting this, good god, I'm gonna send this to every person I know.

As for Grant's description of this dance, do yourselves a favor and totally ignore him... he could not be more incorrect.

The video you are seeing is a dance called 'popping', it has been around since the late 70s and evolved further in the early 80s, it was invented by Boogaloo Sam. This is nothing new at all. It certainly had nothing to do with the Matrix, nor did it come from the 'morph effect' (there is no such thing as a 'morph effect', it's just a made-up term. This is not an actual term that describes any dance or dance move). The style you are seeing is nearly 30 years old. You can find this style of dance in movies from the 80s like Beat Street, Wild Style, Breakin', and Breakin' 2. (Plus you can find tons of great clips online, check out a guy named Mr. Wiggles.)

On a side note, 'locking' is a totally separate dance than 'popping'. Often the term is misconstrued as 'popping and locking' or 'pop=and-lock'. But in reality these are two totally different styles. What you are seeing in this video is pure popping, there is no locking, and the term pop-and-lock is totally inaccurate (although at least 'pop' and 'lock' are actual terms, unlike this made-up 'morph effect'.

Robot, thanks for the background information...

I just want to clarify that I was not referring to 'morph-effect' as a style of dance, or having anything to do with the moves found in this video. What I was doing was comparing the use of popping as a popular gimmick (if you will) in videos and commercials to get attention. Back in the 90s, computer-aiding morphing of scenes, people, vehicles (or what have you) was de rigeur. It became so prevalent, that everyone started ignoring it as an interesting effect. What I was proposing was that popping will become that same ubiquitous gimmick (in commericials and videos) that morphing afforded back in the 90s.

That's not to take anything away from the talent required to pull off such moves. I'm still in awe of these people (and others such as yourself) when I watch the video.

I have lightly edited my original comment to hopefully clarify the intended statement.

Some people just manage to shine - there was always that one kid who could not be beat. Great dancing - glad to see breakin alive as ever.

Robot popper! Loved your comments I to am and old skool popper from way back when. 1984 started when I was 13yrs old and I still pop today! I just wish I could get on some vidoes! Its my life I love doing in and I never stopped even when it wasn't popular and other dancers used to diss me. But it came round again and I was the best popper in the north east of england so I felt it was worth carring on doing it. I loved the vidoe the music rocked for popping to and it made me laugh but good music exellent dancing and laughter is a recipie for a great video!
Check out on U tube put in "Juste Debout" its a competition held in France in Febuary every year for locking, popping and house dancing but no Breaking (thank god) they have there own comp Battle of the year in germany!
