Designer Maarten Baas spent time in Shanghai in preparation for his exhibition, 'The Shanghai Riddle', in participation with Pearl Lam's Contrasts Gallery. While he was there, he was struck by the paradoxes of life in China: the contrasts between the ancient and the new, the priceless and the knock-off, the mass-produced and the hand-crafted. This striking exhibition is his response. Who wouldn't want a hand-carved elm patio chair?
