Veer contributing photographer Marc Brinkmeier has won the prestigious Gruner & Jahr Photo Award for his reportage series on Dementia.
Marc spent several weeks moving within the world of a senior citizen residence which is specialized in accommodating elder persons with advanced cases of Alzheimer’s and other variants of dementia.
He describes the atmosphere as having been at times a ‘theatre of the absurd’, with each patient acting out their specific personality within their pathological state. “It was pure drama. We laughed, we cried … very emotional, especially for family members coming to visit. But it wasn’t all sadness. There was comedy too. And camaraderie, against forgetting.”
