Simplify

Design to paint

(Hopefully this is worthwhile)

I have an assignment to paint a design. I was to create design that uses letters, shapes and five colors. I think I am going with this design.

While sketching thumbnails of other ideas, I kept trying to simplify the design. Finally, I decided to take my advice literally.

The lettering here was incredibly fun to draw and duplicate in illustrator. Now all I have to do is produce it with paint. I think taking steps away from the computer really helps put what design is really all about in perspective. Yeah, I used a computer, but I drew it first... the computer was to get the colors right. I should have veered away from the mouse all together.

Okay, so I know the "li" looks a little like a cursive "b." I don't think its that liig of a issue. Let me know if you disagree.

I am really intrigued by the fluidity of the lettering in this example. I would love to see a larger character set built out from this small series of forms. There is some OpenType magic that could be applied to this style of typeface, where the ligatures and connections would flow differently (and dynamically) based on the various character relationships.

Yes, the “li” could be confused with another form, but that’s where OpenType and some stylistic alternates could help. Have you ever considered building a typeface out of this?

Beautiful.

Grant,

Thanks for your comment! I was just telling my wife how I would love the career of a typographer, but I know I have too much to learn. Well, not too much to learn—I think that kind of talk is useless. I really want to learn. This scripty type is the first of its kind that I've made. But other of my type can be found here.

Thanks a bil
