Monopoly tokens win second prize in a beauty contest

Monopoly has been redesigned with modern touches intended to reflect shifts in pop culture since the game's Depression-era invention. Say goodbye to the roadster, old shoe, top hat, and battleship. Say hello a New Balance running shoe, Starbucks cup, McDonald's french fries, and Motorola cellphone. Strangely, no product placement deals were struck. The new tokens were suggested by the general public as items more indicative of the here and now. Why a labradoodle is more culturally relevant than a terrier is anyone's guess.

With the exception of the plane and the dog, those are sooo tacky.

And where did the street names go? How can you possibly build a house on Jacobs Field or the Mall of America? How can you build a hotel on the Gateway Arch?

They say it's because "America has voted". Maybe they had a badly designed ballot or something...

Monopoly is something very sacred and dear to me....Of course they had to go and EFF IT RIGHT UP.

Seriously...I can't play if I don't get to be the hat.

It all went downhill to me when they stopped using Atlantic City, NJ streets and started using other things like star wars and other cities.

That is madness. Any designer will tell you that a 'best of' will have a strong bias to this year's trends. Yeah, they are more indicative of here and now, but I didn't realize that Monopoly was only a here and now(2006) product. I always assumed that they would be selling it from 2007 and into the future. Apparently not.

Monopoly, i'm afraid, lost it's appeal for me a looooong time ago, so they sell out as much as they want, i don't care.

BUT, if Hasbro gets some crazy idea to mess around with Scrabble, they're gonna have a fight on their hands...

There's prime advertising space on those blank tiles.

Can you say hypo-allergenic? Neutrality is the new relevant.

haha!! there wasnt a badly designed ballot. it was just america. and something about the words america has decided chills me to the bone. i think anything much america decides turns out to be crap. eg. certain wars in certain countries for certain things. ahmm.

It is a travesty. This version is just depressing. With this sort of thing it should be all or nothing, if they're going to make it more realistic then do it all the way. Like Jon said earlier, how can you build a hotel on the Gateway Arch? And can you really buy the Golden Gate bridge for $2.8 million? Are they adjusting for inflation?

Anders is right... now that half the playing pieces are little bits of advertising, the next step will be to put miniature billboards on the blank spaces. As for no product placement deals being struck, do you think that McDonalds, Starbucks and the rest mind. Blech.
