Pre-space age illustrations had the right stuff

Before the space age, there was an age of dreamers. With little knowledge of what lay beyond our blue skies, speculation inspired artists to sketch rockets, spacemen, moonscapes, and domed settlements. This wonderful collection of space art then inspired generations of children to pursue the same dream as engineers, scientists, and astronauts. Any illustrations that made people want to leave the planet are definitely worth revisiting.

Early filmmakers' ideas of outer space are always fun as well. One of my faves is Le Voyage Dans La Lune (1902) by Georges Melies. There is good little article about it at: http://www.filmsite.org/voya.html

You can also check out a shaky video version here.
