In this corner, weighing in with articles, tips, and know-how from her blog Fuel Your Creativity, Adelle Charles of Rochester, New York. In the opposite corner, sporting years of agency experience and philanthropic design projects, Donna Holesworth of Calgary, Alberta. We gave them the same lightbox of six elements, the theme of “Lost” and turned them loose, with only their art direction and keen design sense to guide them.
And the winner, by popular vote, is … Adelle Charles!

“Lost” can mean many different things, sometimes more literal than others. This time I took the less traveled road with this theme. I felt I needed to create a mood of which the female was simply lost in her life. She has her bags packed and ready to leave the man in her life forever before he takes her down mentally with abuse. She’s nervous and afraid and the thoughts keep bouncing back and forth in her head with repetition. She knows what she needs to do to make a better life for herself. But she still seems “Lost” in her current state of mind.

It seemed too obvious a solution to design a concept around being physically lost, so I decided to have a little fun. My mind went to a comic strip, with the mixture of illustration and photo, but the words just wouldn’t come, so I thought a “cover” for a pulp fiction novel would be the next best thing. The mixture of illustration and photo works, because, really, anything works with pulp fiction. Do a little close cropping, add a starburst, a pun or two — and there you have it. The Lost Zombies Stories (looking at it now that a bit of time has passed, I guess it should have been “The Lost Zombie Stories” — isn’t that always the way?).
